Maryland-Style Chocolate Chip Cookies

165g vegetable shortening (e.g. TREK) or margarine
1/4 tsp salt (don't add if your margarine is salted)
75g sugar
4 tbsp golden syrup
2 tsp milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
260g plain flour
1 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
100g chocolate chips

Put the margarine, salt and sugar in a bowl, beat until creamy. Add syrup, milk and vanilla, mix in. Sieve in the flour and bicarbonate of soda, mix well, if a little dry add more milk. Mix in the chocolate chips. Spoon teaspoons of mixture onto oiled baking sheets, bake at 180 degrees centigrade for 8-10 minutes until brown. Allow to cool for 1-2 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.
